1792 • Joseph Mast walks from Pennsylvania and settles much of the land that is now Valle Crucis, North Carolina. In 1810 Joseph Mast’s son David, builds the two-room log cabin which now sits facing the main house at the Mast Farm Inn. Three generations reside in this cabin, and like most of the Valle Crucis residents, the Masts raise corn, grain, sheep, cattle, and food for the family. Now called the Loom House, this original cabin is widely believed to be the oldest inhabitable log cabin in the state of North Carolina.

1880 • David’s son Andrew begins building the main farm house and Andrew’s son, D. Finley Mast, completes it in 1896. In 1900 – Finley and his wife, Josephine, also known as Aunt Josie, begin to make more additions to the house, and begin to operate the property full-time as both a farm and inn. Over the next 20 years, five different symmetrical additions are completed, ultimately comprising thirteen bedrooms and one bathroom.

1913 • When President Woodrow Wilson’s daughter, Jessie, is to be married, Josephine Mast gathers neighbors to help weave spreads and rugs for Jessie’s room in the White House. The president’s family is so impressed by the work they redecorate the room around the weavings. Some of Josephine’s weavings are in the Smithsonian. Josephine used the “Loom House” to make all of her weavings and was very well known for her outstanding work.

Guest Reviews & Testimonials

“Perfect Elopement” • “We just eloped at the Mast Farm Inn and had an amazing time. We were completely charmed by the historic home and romantic Gazebo cottage where we stayed. The electric fireplace made the room so cozy! The inn took care of everything for our ceremony – all we had to do was make a few choices about cake flavors and menus! The photographer (amazing!), music, flowers, officiant, witnesses, and the rest were all taken care of. And the food – some of the best we have ever eaten! Thanks to the Mast Farm Inn” ~ Patrick and Carrie

“Perfect getaway!” • “We got married at the Mast Farm Inn and not only did we have the perfect wedding, but we had an amazing stay. We were very impressed by the adorable rooms, the fabulous food, service and property in general. Our wedding guests also enjoyed the Mast Farm Inn and especially the delicious breakfast. If you live in a big city and are looking for a getaway with a slower pace, definitely stay in one of their cabins.” ~ NW

“A Hidden Treasure in the Hills of North Carolina” • “We stayed at the Mast Farm Inn in North Carolina as a result of my son and his fiancé picking the place to hold their destination wedding. The thought of driving to North Carolina from Maryland to stay at a lodge and cottages did not initially excite me, but it did not matter as attending my son’s wedding was the real draw. So my expectations were initially not very high, but once we got to the Mast Farm Inn we were totally blown away by the setting, the cottages in the woods we stayed in, the food, the very attentive employees and the entire atmosphere to enjoy the company of all the wedding attendees. The mix of cottages from small rustic unique units to the large wood houses hidden in the trees and their large porches and wood finished interiors were absolutely beautiful. And the food was outstanding. The breakfast was to die for, and the dinner for the wedding and the rehearsal dinner was fantastic. And in particular the homemade ice cream and pie kept drawing me back for extra helpings. I would never have thought about driving to North Carolina for a vacation but after staying here, it is on our list to look at going back. In addition, I would be remiss if I did not point out the organizational skills of the team at Mast Farm Inn in organizing the outdoor wedding, reception, dinner and dancing. It was pure genius. They have an eye for detail, and it really showed in the weekend plans. What a wonderful weekend. If you are looking for a great getaway this is the place.” ~ Harvsupra
