The more you explore this website, the more you will realize that we do not do cookie-cutter or off the shelf elopements or weddings. Although all elopements and weddings include a few common elements, every single thing we do is custom fitted to your budget, needs, and desires. So while a package of some type may help start, or be used as a base, at no point do we consider your wedding a product and you a consumer. We help you, a person, prepare your and your family’s wedding experience. While weddings can be highly complex affairs, with numerous moving parts, we like to keep it simple in the spirit of Frederic Chopin who had this to suggest: “Simplicity is the highest goal, achievable when you have overcome all difficulties. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.”

How Much Does a Wedding Usually Cost?
How Much Does a Wedding Usually Cost?
We’d love to keep it sound bite simple but asking what a wedding cost is similar to asking what a bottle of wine, a computer, a car, two week vacation, and in some cases what the down payment for a house costs. The only clear and accurate answer is that it cost as much or as little as you want it to. Hence everything is budget driven. Which is a good thing. The process to arrive at the wedding plan and budget is described on the Costs & Fees page you can find by clicking here. But even there synergies reduce the individual costs listed radically.

I have no idea what a wedding generally costs or what a proper budget needs to be. How do I learn more and become better informed?
Below and on the websites linked to from here you will find a wealth of information on average wedding costs nationwide, in the south, in North Carolina as a whole, in our own Watauga County, and in other cities in North Carolina such as Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill, or Asheville, so you might mull and compare well informed. | Click Here and here for More Information

Do the average costs surveyed, compiled and presented below include Lodging?
All the wedding cost averages available on sites such as www.costofwedding.com or www.theweddingreport.com do not include lodging. This is due to the fact that here and elsewhere, the wedding host does not provide lodging, and the wedding guests pay themselves for their own lodging. In our case lodging rates for wedding hosts and their guests, benefit from group rates, and can be ten-fifteen percent less than our best available rates for that same time frame. | Click Here for More Information

To rent the entire Inn in terms of lodging on a Wednesday in March is $3305 per night, and includes 30 country gourmet breakfasts, To rent the entire Inn in terms of lodging on July 4th weekend is $4355 per night, and includes 30 country gourmet breakfasts. What are the Hidden or Surprise costs?
On our end none, zip, zero, nada. We estimate properly, we respect our commitments, we are generous to a fault, we do not nickel and dime, nor are we a predatory enterprise. Where major hospitality corporations can and do quite regularly get away with murder such as charging $35 a day for parking, $20 for internet, and $5 for a bottle of water, or $40 for breakfast, our family owned and owner managed small is beautiful business philosophy is based on being clear up front, on equity, fairness and on our survival and prosperity depending on you being satisfied before, during and after. Here breakfast, parking, internet, water, good cheer and good humor, and so much more is free and included in our rates. | Click Here for more information

Do you do elopements?
Do you do elopements?
Yes. in fact we specialize in, and do a great many elopements. We have both all inclusive set price elopements, and custom designed elopements.

How much lead time do you need for an elopement?
If we all get lucky we might be able to pull off an elopement in 12 hours. As a rule a few days, a week or a few weeks is better. If for example you opt  for the “Leap of Faith in Grand Style”, scheduling for some things like lodging, special dining, wedding cake, flowers, bridal bouquet, boutonniere, flowers for cake, table & room, elopement coordinator, officiant, witnesses, professional photographer may be problematic on hyper-short notice. And obviously if you are fleeing prosecution, or we have to bail you out of jail, or if you are heading into the witness protection program post-nuptials, those things take a few extra days to arrange :-) | Click Here for More Information

How much does it cost to elope at The Mast Farm Inn?
We have two basic elopement packages which in 95% of cases end up being the base which gets customized according to personal preferences and needs. Many times the bride and groom come with 2-6 friends, parents or children, so rather than an elopement it becomes a mini-wedding. That being said our two base elopement packages are called “Leap of Faith” at $1390 and “Leap of Faith in Grand Style” at $2590. As a rule an elopement slash mini-wedding for less than 8 may cost the bride and groom about $2500 and between $3500-4500 for bride, groom and all the guests when one includes all the lodging, dining, and the other elements. | Click Here and Here for More Information

Do you do small simple weddings?
Do you do small simple weddings?
Yes. Besides elopements we do a great number of simple, casual, semi-casual and formal weddings.

What is the average cost of a small wedding for 25-30 guests?
A ballpark figure for a wedding with 25-30 guests at The Mast Farm Inn might be between 7,000-12,000 without the cost of lodging, but including catering, rentals, flowers, décor, officiant, entertainment, and mostly everything else except photographer and videographer. The lodging costs to your guest may average $190-290 per night per couple and will include breakfast.

What is the average cost of a small wedding for 40-50 guests?
A ballpark figure for a wedding with 40-50 guests at The Mast Farm Inn might be between 9,000-15,000 without the cost of lodging, but including catering, rentals, flowers, décor, officiant, entertainment, and mostly everything else except photographer and videographer. The lodging costs to your guest may average $190-290 per night per couple and will include breakfast.

Can I simply reserve a room, cottage or cabin, for an evening and have the wedding in my room, cottage and cabin, and bring in my own officiant, cake, flowers, food and beverage?
It’s a logical question but be regret that we cannot allow this for numerous sound reasons. All weddings taking place at the Inn require a contract no matter how simple, and require the advance notice to and authorization of our wedding manager. Among many of the sound reasons, there are legal, fire marshal, and insurance prescriptions and constraints involved in operating an Inn vs. simply renting a stand alone cabin or detached home. Each room cottage and cabin has its own occupancy limits, and we have a global occupancy limit. In practical fact, even if the only people in attendance at the wedding and in the room are you, your spouse, an officiant, and photographer, as witnesses, we do not allow it. We are on The National Register of Historic Places, and quite averse to damage to property or furnishings, and as part of Historic Hotels of America and Select Registry we uphold high standards. Other risks include your wedding or group spilling out into the common areas of the Inn and creating what other guests might sense or experience as a disturbance. If you want a 100% self-produced wedding, we recommend you rent a private owner cabin, cottage or home.

Complex, sophisticated big weddings
Do you do complex, sophisticated big weddings?
Yes. The biggest wedding we have done, and which we will book at this time is for 200. If you are one of Forbes 46 Billionaires Under 40 flying in on your private jet, or a member of the cabinet with Secret Service detail in tow, all we can say is “no problem, been there, done that”. We even had one quite sober and non bi-polar but satisfied father of the bride, leave a five thousand dollar wedding reception tip. So yep, we can get mighty fancy. Paris, Geneva & London have got nothing on Valle Crucis :-) Of course we are but simple country folk and hope you will make allowances for our simple country ways :-)

What is the average cost of a big wedding of about 120-150 people?
Way cheaper than Switzerland or London, or Durham, Chapel Hill or Raleigh. The averages below are surveyed and compiled by www.costofwedding.com and present average wedding costs. Their surveys do not include lodging. For equivalent quality, value, lodging, catering, food, beverage, services and products, we are much less expensive than the average, probably 25-35% less, primarily as we are in a rural area, and the fact that we have an Inn and two catering facilities available, one in-house fine-dining, one casual-dining by Over Yonder. As we provide lodging and catering, as well as special event and wedding planning in-house… these all create significant efficiencies. On the other hand asking what a wedding cost is similar to asking what a bottle of wine, a car, one week vacation, or computer costs, and in some cases what the down payment for a house costs. The fast answer is that it cost as much or as little as you want it to. The average wedding cost without lodging in the United States is $26,444. Couples typically spend between $19,833 and $33,055 but, most couples spend less than $10,000. This does not include cost for a honeymoon. | Click Here for More Information

Can I simply reserve a group of rooms, cottages or cabins, for an evening or two and have the wedding in my room, cottage and cabin, and bring in my own officiant, cake, flowers, food and beverage?

If you want a 100% self-produced wedding, we recommend you rent a private owner cabin, cottage or home.

Weddings & Elopements
How much lead time do we need to organize a wedding or elopement at The Inn?
We have done elopements and weddings with as little as two days lead time and as far out as two years. As a general rule, the more people will attend your wedding, the farther out you need to plan. For elopements, 2-12 weeks works in most cases, for small weddings under 80 guests, 5-9 months works in most cases. For big weddings with over 100 guests, 9-18 months is usually well advised.

What if I want to get married faster than your usual lead times?
If you can round up your troops we can too. Let us know if you are in a hurry. Provide us the greatest detail possible by filling out the form Wedding Design Questionnaire used for highly detailed wedding preparation and design and we will jump as fast and as high as you ask that we can.

Where is the Mast Farm Inn?
Where are you located?

Where is the Mast Farm Inn?
The Mast Farm Inn is in The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, a place unlike any other on earth, where ancient landscapes enchant the eye and age-old traditions warm the heart. Congress designated the mountains of North Carolina the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area in recognition of their natural abundance and richly varied cultural history. | Click Here for More Information

Where is Valle Crucis?
Nestled high in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Peaceful rural community that has stayed untouched over the years. Valle Crucis’ scenic beauty and majestic quality continuously mesmerizes residents and draws visitors throughout the world. | Click Here for More Information

What is Valle Crucis Like?
Seeking privacy, majestic nature, natural and man-made luxury, romance? Want to create memorable moments? Want to start your new chapter in a natural sanctuary & haven of peaceful calm? We are not just in the sticks… we are in the twigs! That is partially true. First and foremost, we speak of some altogether mighty nifty twigs. And while you have the impression you stepped back in time, and are in the middle of rural nowhere, in fact some of the most vital, diverse and attractive small mountain villages in the United States are within 10 miles, as is the Blue Ridge Parkway, the second most visited National Park in America. | Click Here for More Information

What is the area like?
This is a place to enjoy numerous activities and adventures, to get back to nature and the great outdoors, to broaden your horizons and knowledge, to build, rebuild or strengthen relationships, to be carefree, to challenge yourself by trying something new, a place where couples come to create memories, to develop and enhance perspective. See more about our inn and area by clicking here, and the nature and character of some of our natural attractions by clicking here, here, and here. | Click Here for More Information

How far are you from major airports?
A two to six hour drive from most major metropolitan areas in the southeastern United States, the major airports servicing this area, Charlotte International, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and Asheville, NC, are about 2 hours driving time. And closer in are Foothills Regional Airport, Tri-Cities Regional Airport, Hickory Regional Airport all less than an hour. | Click Here for More Information

How far are you from civilization and how isolated is the Inn?
The mountain villages which follow are all situated within a 15-30 minute drive of Valle Crucis and each other. Boone is a modern University town, with all that implies in activities, food, sports, art and culture. It is a cultural and social hub which maintains a welcoming, safe and friendly small town feel. Some could say Blowing Rock is down home Beverly Hills in the Mountains, chic, but natural, and minus the slightest pretense… “just us folks, but we dress nice, we like art and good food, beer and wine.” The main street is a treat and there is an abundance of restaurants, boutiques, shops, art and craft galleries. Think casual comfy fancy. Linville is the glorious home of Grandfather Mountain, an Official United Nations biosphere, and Linville Falls. The breathtaking nature in our area is magical. Rugged mountain terrain, rendered accessible in eco-friendly ways. Banner Elk, home of Lees-McRae college could just as well be situated in the alps; a mountain village where half the population is composed of students, and which is surrounded by two ski resorts. Short of the Swiss-Italian border near Villa D’Este, Lugano and Como, or Geneva, we know of no place on earth like The Western North Carolina High Country, which tucks in that much, with such a small footprint, into the folds of majestic mountains and valleys. | Click Here for More Information

How challenging a drive is the topography and terrain?
Not a problem except when snowing, and even then the roads are brined and cleared very promptly, usually within 15 minutes. Not alpine mountain driving so much as rolling hill driving. Scenic drives, great roads and highways, highly accessible, little traffic. | Click Here for More Information

How and where do I get my marriage license and take care of legal preparation and follow-up?
As of October 2001, a marriage license issued in any county in the state may be used at any place within the state within sixty days of the date of issuance. We recommend getting this legal aspect of your wedding out of the way a few weeks to a month before your ceremony date, but there is no waiting period to be married in North Carolina, so you could obtain your license the day of your arrival if the Watauga County Register Of Deeds is open at that time. Do you need to make an appointment to apply for a marriage license? No, marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:00am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Applicants should be at the Watauga County Register Of Deeds office by 4:30 p.m. The fee for the license is $60.00. Cash or personal checks are accepted.| Click Here for More Information

Set price wedding packages
Do you have all inclusive set price wedding packages?
Yes and no, while our elopement packages can be used exactly as designed, they are usually customized. We do not do packaged cookie-cutter weddings, even if you select to elope, and at no point in the process are you on your own. No wedding at The Mast Farm Inn is insignificant or too small, because when you look back, regardless of how many attended or the number of fireworks, you will remember it as “the”, or certainly one of the most, significant turning points in your life; It is by its very nature a personal crossroads for the bride, groom, family and friends.

Do we have to rent the entire facility?
Not at all. We are an ideal destination wedding venue for 2 to 200. We are an all season, year-round boutique hotel and country inn, open 365 days a year. At no time is the Inn empty of lodging and dining guests unless we close reservations to the general public for a special event such as yours or for renovations. Due to its scale and size, in all cases requiring the use of indoor spaces, when you have a wedding at the inn with over 24 people, the Inn becomes de-facto your private facility for a private event, and we do not take reservations for non-wedding-party guests for lodging or dining. If the wedding party had over 24 people for any of the functions, and your guests did not lodge here, and we had 24 non-wedding party Inn guests, it would without fail create an “attention deficit conflict” :-) with other inn guests who are here. You won’t enjoy that, nor will they. This is because our total occupancy for lodging is 48 including children. In other words if a wedding has over 24 guests for any of the functions, enough of your guests need to lodge at the Inn to book all the rooms, cottages and cabins. We also do many small destination and local weddings under 24 guests, for which we waive that requirement completely, as the regular Inn guests will not overwhelm your party and vice-versa. | Click Here for More Information

Can we just do the bridal luncheon or rehearsal dinner at the Inn?
Yes, most definitely, but quantity of guests or seasonal restrictions may apply.| Click Here for More Information

Can we just do the wedding ceremony at the Inn?
Sorry not possible and if you visited you would see it makes little sense. We are not an event space or wedding ceremony venue like a Chapel might be. The Inn is usually full of guests and diners so simply doing the ceremony here would be inappropriate to and or overwhelm our facilities. We are an ideal destination wedding venue for 2 to 200. We are an all season, year-round boutique hotel and country inn open 365 days a year. At no time is the Inn empty of lodging and dining guests unless we close reservations to the general public. If the wedding reception had over 12 people, and we had 24 non-wedding party Inn guests, it would without fail create an “attention deficit conflict” :-) with other inn guests who are here. You won’t enjoy that, nor will they. | Click Here for More Information

Can we just do the wedding reception at the Inn?
Possible but not likely. Similar considerations as above but depending on day of the week and seasons might be doable. | Click Here for More Information

Can we take wedding photos on the estate and grounds even if we do not get married there?
May be no problem, and with pleasure, as long it is the bride, groom, photographer and helper, and you advise us in advance and receive authorization. We may well have a special event going on such as a wedding or family reunion as you arrive unannounced with your 100 closest friends :-) Don’t laugh it’s happened. For the same reasons evoked above, as we are a private estate, and not being a public park, the comfort, serenity and enjoyment of our clients need to be our priority and their peace and quiet respected. | Click Here for More Information

Can we 100% self-produce an elopement or wedding at The Inn by simply renting rooms, cottages or cabins, and renting one of your locations an sites on the estate and bring in all the people and things we need?
It’s a logical question but be regret that we cannot allow this for numerous sound reasons. All weddings taking place at the Inn require a contract no matter how simple, and require the advance notice to and authorization of our wedding manager. Among many of the sound reasons, there are legal, fire marshal, and insurance prescriptions and constraints involved in operating an Inn vs. simply renting a stand alone cabin or detached home. If you want a 100% self-produced wedding, we recommend you rent a private owner cabin, cottage or home.

What if some of our guests have food restrictions, allergies, are vegetarian or vegan?
No problem at all, we simply need to be advised in writing for each person.

Can we or our guests bring children?
Most definitely! Children of all ages are welcome in our eight cottages. Our seven farmhouse rooms are reserved for adults and children 12 and over.

Can we or our guests bring pets?
Sorry No Pets. While we have many dogs & cats, a horse, donkey, goats, chickens, turkeys, rabbits & bee hives, it’s not about us, it’s about respecting guests which coincide with or follow your visit, many of whom may have legitimate medical reasons for needing a pet free environment indoors.

Is Smoking Allowed?
Without being judgmental, our inn and all indoor areas are 100% smoke-free, including outside dining areas on the porch of the main house and terrace. A guest recently threw his lit cigarette in the flower beds surrounding the Inn, the mulch smoldered for hours and eventually caught on fire and the main house would have burned down were it not for the luck of the just.
