Penland School of Crafts
Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, and wood. The school also offers artists’ residencies, community collaboration programs, and a gallery and information center.
The Parkway Craft Center
Milepost 294 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Moses Cone Manor just off 221. Finest quality Appalachian Mountain hand-made crafts by members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Craft demonstrations on the porch.

Traditions Pottery is located in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains just south of Blowing Rock NC. Mike and Janet Calhoun produce handmade pottery in traditional shapes such as face jugs, Rebekah pitchers, candle sticks, mugs, bowls, and teapots. Bolick Pottery and Traditions Pottery features Bolick, Traditions, and Original Owens Pottery, as well as gifts and personal items, and regional jewelry by The Artist Jay and locally made soaps and lotions.
The Original Mast General Store
Established in 1883, The Mast Store carries most everything you’d need for life in the past century and most of this one. On the National Register of Historic Places. The small community of Valle Crucis is North Carolina’s first rural historic district and is where you’ll find the Original Mast General Store and the Mast Store Annex. Still the center of the community, the Original Mast Store houses the Post Office and offers up a 5¢ cup of coffee. Traversing its creaking floorboards, you’ll find country gourmet foods, cast iron cookware, speckleware, old-fashioned toys, footwear for all walks of life, hardware, and even a pair of galluses, if you need them.
The Mast Store Annex
The Mast Store Annex can outfit you with stylish casual clothing and hiking gear. You’ll also find over 500 old-fashioned favorite candies-by-the-barrel in a building that was once a competing general store. The Dutch Creek Ice Cream stand is open seasonally out back by the creek.
River Cross Market
River Cross Market houses a collection that is handmade in America. The selections include: potter, jewelry, handbags, birdhouses, glass, metal, garden accessories, painting, photography and a fun selection for children.
Valle Crucis Mercantile
Valle Crucis Mercantile offers unique, specialty items such as farmhouse and cabin décor, specialty and diet specific foods, local produce, vintage sodas, soy candles and pottery. The mercantile also features a “Koffee Korner” that utilizes Keurig K-Cups.

One of the Top Twenty Events in the Southeast, ASU’s major summer attraction features the finest music, theatre, dance, visual arts and film. Held each July on and around the university campus. Experience the arts at a higher altitude!
Blowing Rock Art and History Museum
The Blowing Rock Art and History Museum is located at 159 Chestnut Street in Blowing Rock, Watauga County, North Carolina, a small village nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its mission is to promote visual arts and history and to celebrate the rich heritage of the mountains.
Ashe County Cheese Company
Ashe County Cheese is Carolina’s oldest cheese plant, producing quality cheese since 1930. We are located in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains. Watch the fascinating process of cheese making from our viewing area and visit our cheese and gift shop. We sell over 20 varieties of original Ashe County Cheese as well as our own county butter, homemade fudge and everyone’s favorite, fresh cheese curd. We also offer other fine cheeses, locally made wines and a variety of gifts, souvenirs and old fashioned snacks and candies.
Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church of The Frescoes
Just outside downtown West Jefferson are the Fresco paintings by world famous artist Benjamin F. Long IV. These life size Fresco paintings at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church are exquisite. Part of the Blue Ridge Fresco Trail, four of these frescoes are right here in Ashe County with 3 Frescoes featured at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church which include Mary Great with Child, John the Baptist and Mystery of Faith. The Last Supper painting is located at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Glendale Springs, just 15 minutes east of West Jefferson. The Fresco churches are open year-round. All ages, groups and buses are welcome.
The Orchard At Altapass
In 1995 Katherine Trubey purchased 280 acres of unrestricted land straddling the Blue Ridge Parkway to preserve its historic beauty and prevent development that would destroy the views from the Parkway. Though the land was bought as a preservation project, the new owners recognized that they had much more than Blue Ridge Parkway views and heritage apples to preserve. “Kit” Trubey, together with Bill and Judy Carson, began a journey: to preserve the unique history and culture of Altapass, and to use The Orchard at Altapass location to showcase it.
Mountain Home Music
A concert series and radio show which presents the best of traditional Appalachian musicians and performers. The series runs each summer in Boone and each fall in Blowing Rock.
Banner Elk Winery
In 2006, the age-old tradition of winemaking made its debut in the region with the establishment of Banner Elk Winery & Villa, the first commercial winery built in Avery and Watauga counties. Banner Elk wines pay tribute to the rugged mountain landscape and capture the delicate nuance and subtle flavors of the fruit. Our vintners produce excellent wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Westglow is an all-inclusive spa resort that combines the amenities of a luxury spa with a holistic approach to health & wellness. Situated on a historic 42-acre estate and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Westglow Resort & Spa is serenely nestled in the shadow of Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Constructed in 1917, the estate was originally the summer home of famed artist and writer Elliott Daingerfield.
The Spa at Chetola Resort
The Spa features a wide variety of services including massage therapies, facials, nail treatments, cosmetic applications and a hair boutique. The Spa, which opened in Fall 2009, features a Mission motif with furnishings and décor by Bob Timberlake, Charleston Forge and local artists. Natural sea stones are featured throughout the spa including the fireplace and inlays in the maple hardwood floors. Turchin Center for the Visual Arts
The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts fulfills Appalachian State University’s long-held mission of providing a home for world-class visual arts programming. The center is the largest facility of its kind in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia, and is named for university benefactors Robert and Lillian Turchin. Featuring two wings of exhibition and support space and the Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing, the center is located on King Street in the heart of downtown Boone, North Carolina.

Over Yonder is a new destination restaurant & bar in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Located near Blowing Rock, Boone, Banner Elk, and Linville, in The Western North Carolina High Country Mountains. Designed, owned and managed by Executive Chef Andrew Long, Over Yonder restaurant tells the story of historic Appalachian cuisine in a picturesque setting atop the rolling hills and peaks of Valle Crucis, North Carolina. Located across from the Original Mast General Store, a few hundred yards from The Mast Farm Inn. Over Yonder has a full Spirits, Beer, Wine, Mixed Beverage Restaurant ABC license and features a full service bar.
Owner and Executive Chef Sam Ratchford is a native of the Boone area, who attended culinary school at New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont. After a few years as a sous chef in Park City Utah, Sam returned to High Country to be near his family and become the first Executive chef at Storie Street Grille in Blowing Rock. Alyce moved to Boone from Asheville in the fall of 2000 to attend Appalachian State University studying Special Education and Psychology. They met each other while working together at Storie Street, Sam as chef and Alyce as a front of house manager. In early 2008 Sam and Alyce purchased Vidalia from their friends, Michael and Camille Vetro.
The Best Cellar
The Best Cellar Restaurant in Blowing Rock, North Carolina was established in 1975. The original location was in a basement on Main Street, where previous owners sold soups, sandwiches and new and used books. The name was derived from the fact that the restaurant sold books in a basement, hence The Best Cellar. Over the years, the menu evolved from sandwiches and soups to the freshest of meats and seafood.
Bill Greene’s passion for cooking started at a very early age working at a local country club in North Carolina. After high school he enrolled into the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and upon graduation he was asked to be a sous chef at the Ocean Reef Club In Key Largo, Florida. Looking to grow in his culinary career he moved to Scottsdale Arizona to work at the prestigious Phoenician Resort. Landing a job at the resort’s fine dining room Mary Elaine’s. This was a turning point in his culinary career.

Timberlake’s Restaurant at Chetola Resort
The Manor House Estate was the elegant home of J. Luther Snyder, the most famous of Chetola’s owners. Snyder purchased Chetola Estate in 1926. Also known as “the Coca Cola King of the Carolinas,” Snyder’s wife held frequent celebrations and parties that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and 1940s. On July 28, 2012, Chetola officially opened Timberlake’s Restaurant in the historical building, with a menu inspired by world-renowned North Carolina artist and designer Bob Timberlake’s culinary favorites.

Appalachian Mountain Brewery’s mission is to sustainably brew high quality beer, support local non-profits and help our community prosper.
